Excavating.- The spuds of dredgers are mounted so that they may be stowed horizontally after withdrawal. The spud b held by clutches c in a carriage d, which can be moved fore and aft on wheels e by the leading screw f, is withdrawn and raised until a recess k in the spud aligns with grooves in blocks e. On placing a bolt through the hole, the spud may be lowered in a horizontal position on rollers m and may be slewed transversely of the deck by mounting the rollers on a turntable.
