Abstract

339,850. Ullmann, G Jan 26, 1929, [Convention date]. Retting.-In the boiling (bucking) process for obtaining fibres from vegetable material such as cotton, flax, jute, &c., by the removal of the fatty and waxy substances, pectin substances, albuminoids, the natural colouring matters and woody husk portions, using as solvents metallic hydroxides such as Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH)2, Sr(OH)2, Al2 (OH)6' or Fe2 (OH)6, and caustic alkalies, the use of these agents together in one boiling liquor and a product capable of continuous bleaching without pressure and in open vessels is obtained by adding to the boiling liquor such materials as allow the metallic soaps of the fats and waxes present to be produced in a soluble or highly dispersive form in which they can easily be rinsed off. Suitable substances for this purpose ara the well known soluble oil preparations which are insensitive to lime and are obtained by the sulphonation of castor oil and other oils and subsequent boiling with alkalies, also sulphonation products of unsaturated fatty acids and resins. Alkali salts of sulphonic acids of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons having alkyl side chains such as isopropyl naphthylamine sulphonate of sodium and known, similarly acting substances can be used. After boiling, the material is washed and acidified and a product is obtained which frequently requires no further bleaching, or, if bleaching is necessary, a less concentrated bleaching is needed. The process is a satisfactory preliminary to the bleaching of coloured textiles.
