Abstract

338,606. Dunlop Cotton Mills, Ltd., Andrew, T. E., and Langstreth, M. May 21, 1929. Divided on 338,570. Spindle apparatus; special yarns, producing; winding-machines. - In apparatus in which the yarn is withdrawn in the form of a loop from a rotating bobbin mounted on a fixed spindle so that two twists are imparted thereto for each revolution of the apparatus, the whole of, or the main part of, the tensioning of the yarn is effected by the weight of the bobbin operating through a drag washer interposed between the bobbin and its support. Provision may be made to adjust or control the tension so that it remains constant during the unwinding of the bobbin, and so that it may be predetermined to suit any specified conditions. The bobbin 2, Fig. 1, rotates about a tubular spigot 3. carried by a bobbin support 4, mounted on ball bearings 29 on a spindle 1 driven by a pulley 35. The yarn passes from the bobbin through a central hole in the spindle 1, and through a hole in a rotating disc 33 to the outer edge of the same and thence to take up point 38. Ballooning is controlled by a ring 36 and a ring 37 is provided to hold the yarn clear of the bobbin when setting-up. The bobbin 2 is wound on a tube 10 keyed to a sleeve 5 rotatable on the spigot 3 and carrying a flange 6 seated on a washer 7 on the platform 8. The washer is fixed to the platform or the platform is roughened to prevent rotation. The platform 8 is floatably mounted on the support 4 as by sitting on a spherical seat 11. A peg 12 prevents rotation of the platform. To maintain an even tension during the unwinding of a bobbin, the bobbin may be wound so that the weight, of the package 13, Fig. 3, considered as a function of its diameter decreases at such a rate that the ratio of the radius of the bobbin to the weight of the yarn and the spool remains constant; or the density of the spool may vary as unwinding proceeds by employing a traverse in winding varying between close and open; or the weight may be increased at the required rate by dropping water into a reservoir as the weight of yarn decreases; or a collapsable drag washer may be employed. To suit the tension to particular conditions the effective diameter of the washer and the material of which it is made may be varied. This arrangement of spindle may be used to pass the twisted yarn to a ring doubling-spindle, or a number of yarns may be twisted one round another to produce fancy effects, the tension, counts &c. of the different yarns being arranged to give the required results. It may also be used to wrap an outer filament round a central core so as to provide insulation on a wire, as shown in Fig. 7. The bobbin support may be of the kind described in Specification 338,570.
