Abstract

337,868. Murray, H. D., Spencer, D. A., and Colour Photographs (British & Foreign), Ltd. Aug. 24, 1929. Printing,-paper; films.-The material comprises a water-impermeable cellulose ester, or fibrous material such as paper or fabric coated or impregnated with such an ester, the surface of the ester being rendered water-permeable by superficial deesterification and thereafter impregnated with a light-sensitive salt, such as a salt of silver, iron, or chromium, or a diazo compound. The ester may be in the form of celluloid, or cellulose acetate in the form of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Celastoid." When the ester is to be compounded with paper or fabric, this may be soaked in acetone before treating it, as by spraying, dipping, or brushing, with a solution of the ester in a solvent such as acetone. The ester may contain the usual plastifiers, and the superficial de-esterification may be performed, in the case of nitrocellulose by ammonium sulphide, or in the case of cellulose acetate by acids or alkalies to which may be added (1) alcohol or acetone to accelerate the action or (2) neutral inorganic salts such as chloride or sulphate of soda, or organic colloidal substances such as gum arabic or polyvalent alcohols, to render the action more uniform. After de-esterification, the layer is cleared with acid or alkali according to the deesterifying agent used, and is then washed and dried. The water-permeable surface may be sensitized with a silver salt by treatment in known manner with successive baths which form a sensitive silver salt by double decomposition.
