Abstract
336,235. Picton, N., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. May 27, 1929. Cellulose nitrates.-Wood pulp board is divided into substantially uniform small pieces without affecting the conglomeration of the fibres, and the small pieces are treated with nitrating acid containing not less than about 40 per cent of nitric acid so as to produce a nitrocellulose of high density and uniform composition which is suitable for the manufacture of propellent powders, blasting explosives, varnishes, finishes, films, leather-cloth, celluloid and linoleum plastics. Sheet wood pulp may be subdivided into uniform pieces by a machine commonly used for cutting sheets of nitrocellulose plastics into powder grains. The pieces may be about oneeighth of an inch square and have a bulk density three or four times that of well-pressed cotton linters. The proportion of nitric acid is varied according to the class of wood from which the pulp is prepared and in the case of hard sheets, the concentration of nitric acid may be 80 per cent of the acid mixture. The volume of acid used may be as low as five times the weight of the cellulose. Nitration may be effected by the pot process and after removing the acid and drowning in water, the product may be stabilized and treated to lower the viscosity in known manner. Alternatively, a displacement or mechanical process or a combined mechanical and displacement process may be used. The product may be finished in the dense condition in which it is formed, or it may be pulped and then finished in the usual manner. Instead of cutting up the wood pulp sheets in a machine used for cutting sheets of nitrocellulose plastics into powder grains, the sheets may be passed through a paper shaving machine to form narrow strips which are then cut into grains by means of a guillotine or by attaching a suitable appliance to the stripcutting machine. The pieces may also be punched out as small discs, or for larger pieces an ordinary guillotine machine may be used.
