Abstract
335,902. Becker & Co. (1924), Ltd., (Wieger, B.). July 1, 1929. Sizes.-Paper or paper pulp is sized with an emulsion prepared by adding to the molten sizing material, maintained in rapid agitation, 1-3 per cent of an aqueous dispersion of a protective colloid, preferably alkali casein. The sizing material is preferably colophony but may also or alternatively comprise other resins, natural or artificial, solid or semi solid hydrocarbons, waxes, fats, higher fatty acids or mixtures thereof, with or without drying oils. The emulsion is precipitated on the paper or pulp by the addition of about 1 per cent of alum or aluminium sulphate. Colouring matter may be incorporated with the emulsion. Examples of the invention are as follows :-To 98 kgs. of melted pine resin, in a vessel having stirring arms rotating at about 300 r.p.m. is added a small quantity of water pre. ferably containing 0.1-0.7 per cent of alkali and subsequently a hot solution of 2 kgs. of casein in 25 litres of water and 200 gms. of caustic soda. Cold water is subsequently added until an emulsion is added to the paper pulp and subsequently precipitated by the addition of 1 per cent of alum. Mixtures which may be emulsified and used in the above manner are :-(1) colophony, 90 per cent and copal 10 per cent; (2) colophony, 85 per cent and paraffin 15 per cent; (3) copal, 60 per cent, shellac, 20 per cent and resin varnish, 20 per cent; (4) resin, 60 per cent, stearin, 10 per cent and basic colouring matter, 30 per cent. 6.66 per cent of the last-referred to emulsion may be added to the pulp which then contains 1 per cent of colouring matter but may be oversized; this is not necessarily disadvantageous. For surface-sizing paper an emulsion is used, containing 60 kgs. of resin, 30 kgs. of copal and 10 kgs. of paraffin and diluted to 3 per cent strength.
