Electric hot-plates are made by casting metal around tubular heating- elements and the elements are held in place by clips secured to or formed integral with metal strips, the elements resting on the surface of the strips or flat portions of the clips secured thereto. Fig. 1 shows two spiral elements 1, 2 held by clips 5 secured to strips 4 as shown in Fig. 2. The elements thus secured are placed in a mould 7, Fig. 3, the strips 4 resting on one of the faces of the mould. The whole may be cleaned by sand blasting before placing in the mould. The ends of the elements are turned up and bosses cast round them as shown, their extremities being protected by caps 8 secured by set-screws. The clips, instead of being secured to the strips may be made by bending up portions thereof. In this case the strip may be formed with a strengthening rib, with pressed-up portions on which the elements rest, so that the elements are at a suitable distance from the surface of the plate. The elements may be slightly flattened before being placed in position. The strips mav be arranged in a cross with their inner ends secured to a central member.
