Abstract
335,168. Whitmore, R. L., and Spencer Moulton &. Co., Ltd., G. May 14, 1929. Combined buffer and drawgear. - Relates to central buffing and draw-gear for railway vehicles of the kind wherein the buffing and draw springs are embraced by a yoke 1 which, by a cotter and slot connection 5, 6 with the coupler-head shank 2, is pulled outwardly when drawing and relatively to which the couplerhead and shank can move inwardly when buffing. According to the invention the springs located within the yoke are adapted to be compressed between .abutments and movable compression plates, one or more of which is provided with an extended stem or stems whereby compression of the springs in parallel is obtained as required. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, two abutments 21, 22 are secured to a housing 7 containing three springs 15, 18 and 12, which are disposed between a front follower plate 16, movable compression plates 17, 19, 20, 14, and the closed end 13 of the housing, the plates 19 having stems 23, 24 projecting on either side thereof. In buffing the elements 16, 19 and 14 are moved inwardly to compress the springs against the elements 17, 20 and 13, while in drawing the function of all these elements is reversed. The springs employed are preferably of the compound metal and rubber type, and additional springs may be disposed between the closed end 13 of the housing and the rear 11 of the yoke, and between the yoke and the underframe. The abutments 21, 22 are preferably constituted by cotters secured to the sides of the housing 7 as shown in Fig. 4, with or without upper and lower stops 26, or abutments in the force of spring rings may be provided, while in a modification the housing 7 is omitted and the abutments are attached to the yoke 1. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 7, the housing 7 is built up of a number of sections having inwardly projecting flanges 34 at their rear ends to form compression plates 35 furnished with integral stems 36. In this arrangement compression of the springs in parallel takes place either in buffing or in drawing, but the sections may be initially spaced a slight distance apart and the stems 36 shortened so that the parallel compression is preceded by a series compression. In a further modification, Fig. 13, shortening of the stems 23a, 24a of the plates 19, 14 is arranged to allow the springs 15, 18, 12 to be compressed singly and then in parallel. In another modification only two springs are employed, these being of oval crosssection, and the housing 7 may be shortened to contain only one of the springs. Specification 183,018 is referred to.
