Abstract

334,424. Revelli, B. A. Oct, 31, 1928, [Convention date]. Breech actions, sliding barrel and breech-block; firing-appliances; safety appliances; trigger guards.-A short-recoil automatic rifle is made with a sliding striker 4, Fig. 1, situated within the breech-block 3 and connected thereto by a torsion spring 12 which rotates the breechblock to lock it by means of lugs 3a to the barrel 5. The ends of the spring 12 are bent in to the axial direction and fit into recesses in the breech-block and striker, respectively. When a shot is fired, the barrel 5 recoils against a short spring 6, and the stem 3a, Fig. 4, of the handle 14 of the breech-block comes against a small wheel 13 on the breech casing and the breech-block is turned round thereby to unlock it from the barrel and bring the stem 3<a> in line with a longitudinal groove 2<c> in the casing. The breech-block then continues its recoil against a spring 11, and at the same time cocks the hammer 18. The return stroke of the breech-block feeds a fresh cartridge into the barrel, and at the end of the stroke the spring 12 relocks the breech-block. A sleeve 113 on the barrel can be rotated to either of two positions. In one position, teeth on this sleeve are opposite recesses in a part 7 of the breech casing and the barrel is free to recoil, as stated above. In the other position, the teeth of the sleeve lie opposite teeth on the part 7 and prevent the recoil of the barrel and the automatic action resulting therefrom. The breech action can then be worked by the side handle 14 in the ordinary non-automatic way. The hammer 18 is pivoted at 19 and carries a sliding spring detent 25 which snaps under a fixed ledge 26 when the hammer is cocked by the recoil or opening movement of the breech-block. The trigger 20 is pivoted at 21 and a finger 22 is pivoted to the trigger at 23. When the trigger is pulled, the finger 26 pushes the detent 25 off the ledge 26. During automatic action, the recoil is so rapid that the hammer is cocked before the trigger is released; the detent 25 then snaps under the finger 22 and, when the trigger is released, slips up to the ledge 26 in readiness to be pushed off therefrom by the next pull on the trigger. The hammer may be held at safe by a pivoted catch 30, and when so held, the detent 25 is slightly below the ledge 26. The firing mechanism and a depending magazine 17 are mounted in a trigger-guard 15 secured to the stock 1 by screws 16.
