Cigarette-making machines. -In cutting-off mechanism for continuous-rod machines, the inclination of the helical knife 20 is adjusted to correspond with the alteration in speed imparted to the rod for varying the length of the cigarette. The knife is guided between cheeks 19 projecting from a plate 18, which rests against a companion plate on the cutter head 3. A set-screw 21 traversing a lug on each plate determines the relative position of the two plates and the inclination of the knife. Compensation for knife-wear is afforded through gearing within the cutter head. The knife is secured by a wedge 41 to a holder 42. A threaded spindle 39 passes through the holder and carries a bevel wheel 36 which is in gear with a second bevel wheel 35 on a spindle 34 having a spur-wheel 33. The hand-wheel 31 is pinned to a sleeve 25 which is eccentric to a supporting spindle 23 fixed in the head 3 and is integral with a gear 27, while a loose pawl 32 normally rests on the wheel 33. The knife is initially set when the machine is stationary by drawing out the wheel 31 and inserting a crank handle into the opening 48. The wheels 27, 33 are thus brought into .engagement. A fine adjustment during running is obtained by stopping the wheel 31, and the eccentric sleeve 25. As the wheel 33 rotates with the head 3 about the stationary eccentric 3 it is checked once per revolution by the pawl 32. A continuous automatic adjustment of the knife may be obtained by permanently fixing the sleeve 25 and placing a speed-reducing train between the spindle 34 and holder 42. The eccentrics which drive the rodguides 22 and the knife-grinders 57 are adjusted in correspondence with the rod-speed and knife inclination. A flange 62 on a collar 63 carried by the shaft 13 has a diametral guideway for the eccentric ring 61, the position of which is fixed by a screw 68 fitting in a bracket secured to the collar. The square heads of the screws 66, 67, 68 are accessible through an opening 69, normally closed by a disc 71 and cover 70. Latches 84 pivoted at 85 have pins engaging radial slots 82 in a disc 81 on the square end 80 of the central spindle 77. This may be turned by a handle 79 to operate the latches, and a nut 76 integral with a handle 75 tightens the cover by acting on the flange 73 of the sleeve 72. Lubrication is effected by way of a funnel 91 and pipes 92.
