Lock-stitching by hooks. - In a vertical axis rotary looper lock-stitching machine means are provided for ensuring the rapid spreading of the needle-coop in casting it around the mass of under-thread. Depending from the under side of the throat plate 2 is a lug 31 in position to overlie the loop-taker plate 17 as it is entering the needle loop. The lug has a face 32 extending across the face of the feed slots 7 and inclined downwardly and laterally. As the plate 17 enters the needle-loop, it carries the loop against the face 32 of the lug. The loop is thus held against freely following the point of the plate and is forced towards the throat 19 of the plate and is therefore rapidly spread to facilitate casting around the bobbin carrier.
