Effecting reactions between gases; catalytic apparatus. - In effecting exothermic gas reactions between substances of which at least one is liquid at ordinary temperatures, the hot reaction gases are passed in indirect heat exchange partly with the initial gases and partly with reservoirs containing the liquid, which is thereby vaporized and carried along by the steam of the initial gas. The Figure shows apparatus suitable for carrying out the production of hydrogen from water gas. The reaction tubes b are surrounded at their lower ends by water jackets c and in their upper parts by the jacket a in which the water gas entering at 2 circulates. Additional steam if required is supplied at 3.
