Discharging; cooling discharged materials.- Incandescent coke is discharged from retorts or ovens a into receivers c mounted on trucks d which are then run into separate cooling chambers e each adapted to contain one receiver and provided, in or adjacent the walls, with conduits f, Fig. 5, through which a cooling medium circulates. Fig. 2 shows the chambers e arranged side by side along a track on which runs a platform h adapted to receive the trucks d from a track b disposed in front of the retorts a. A modification is described in which the chambers e are arranged on both sides of an extension of the track b, the trucks d being provided with turntables which enable the receivers c to be turned with their length parallel to that of the chambers e.
