Abstract

311,588. Vogel, J. L. F. July 4, 1928. Case-hardening. - Irons or steels containing molybdenum as an essential constituent and which may in addition contain other metals such as chromium or tungsten are hardened by a nitrogenization process, effected by heating them with a solid nitrogen compound which, at or below the temperature at which the nitrogenization of iron by nascent nitrogen occurs, decomposes in the presence of the metal, with or without contact with air, water or water vapour, generating the nascent nitrogen required for the process. The nitrogen compound may be any one of the substances urea, cyanides, cyanamides, sodium amide, hexamethlyene tetramine, potassium amide, naphthalene diamine, dicyandiamide, phenyl-hydrazine, acetamide and guanidine, or may be a mixture of such substances. It mav either be introduced into the heating receptacle together with the iron or steel or may be added after the latter has been heated. In order to avoid deformation of the articles treated, heating should not be carried to a temperature above 1100 ‹ C.
