Ironing-presses.-An ironing- machine, of the type wherein two ironing members are relatively movable to each other to apply pressures to the article being ironed, is provided with means for forcing air through the pressing member and article, and subsequently forcing air therethrough in the opposite direction to cool the article. Upon starting a motor 43, Fig. 2, a rotary motion is given to a disc 30 to reciprocate a. link 29 thereby pressing a head 18 upon a buck 17. The head 18 is guided by arcuate slots 15 so that it is rocked upon the buck 17. The head 18 has a line contact with the article and consequently exerts greater pressure on it than otherwise would be the case. The buck is heated by steam flowing in pipes 71, Fig. 7, connected to a live steam chamber 69. The steam flows through pipes 71 into pipes 67, thence to an exhaust chamber 70 and outlet 77. A motor 46, Fig. 2, is started after the operation has placed an article to be ironed on the buck. The motor actuates a fan 48 to blow air through the buck. During this operation a button 50<1> of the switch will be in its outermost position. The air forced into the buck is pre-heated by the steam pipes and emerges through perforations 80, Fig. 8, so as to augment the drying of the article and also to force the article away from the perforations and give it a smoother press. When the ironing is finished, the extension 51<1> connected to a rod 25 forces the switch button 50<1> downwards breaking the circuit of the motor 46 and reversing it. The fan 48 then functions as suction medium to draw air downwards into the buck 17, cooling and drying the article.
