Abstract

311,249. Chemical Engineering & Wilton's Patent Furnace Co., Ltd., Wilton, N., and Wilton, T. 0. Nov. 8, 1927. Treating gases with liquids.-Apparatus comprises a series of chambers each consisting of an upper space 2 in which liquid is sprayed, a central space containing bundles of vertical loose tubes 5 inside which are placed twisted strips or helical elements imparting a circular motion to the liquid inside the tube, and a lower. liquid collecting space 7. The gas enters each upper compartment 2 through an aperture 1, flows downwardly through the central space together with the liquid and passes to the succeeding chamber through an uptake 8. A liquid circulating pump is provided for each chamber and overflow pipes are arranged between the liquid collecting compartments 7 to effect a general flow of liquid through the apparatus counter to that of the gas. Coal gas may be treated with oils or water and chemical liquids to extract ammonia, benzol, naphthalene or water vapour.
