Abstract

319,404. Hawley, C. G. June 22, 1928. Thermally-actuated valves.-A safety device E interposed between the fuel valve a' and the vaporizing chamber 23 of an oil burner comprises a shank member 38, made from a metal such as iron having a small expansion. coefficient, riveted at 36<1> to a tubular member 36 made from a metal such as copper having a larger expansion coefficient. 'The member 36 is secured in a lug 34 on the vaporizer casting A and projects into the furnace fire space. When the device is cold a valve surface e' on the member 38 engages a seating a<5> and prevents the flow of fuel to the chamber 23. On the burner being heated at starting and during normal operation, the differential expansion between the members 36, 38 causes the valve surface e<1> to move away from the seating a<5>, thereby allowing the fuel to flow to the chamber 23, but should excessive heat be generated in the furnace the feed flow is diminished or cut off by a second valve surface 41 on the member 38 approaching or engaging a seating 37<1> on the member 36. The seatings a<5>, 37<1> may be formed by thin lips which are belled out by assembling the parts of the device cold and then heating it.
