Vices.-In a quick-action machine vice, the clamping spindle l, which is preferably separate from the movable jaw m, works in a nut f which has limited longitudinal movement within a carriage d and which has a tapered lower portion g coacting with wedges h so that when the spindle and carriage are moved up to engage the movable jaw with the work, the nut is forced back, thus jamming the wedges against the side cheeks c of the slotted base plate a and locking the carriage while the spindle is rotated to apply the final clamping pressure. The wedges are retained by a lower cover plate i. The fixed jaw b is preferably integral with the base plate. To open the vice, the screw spindle is first loosened whereupon the carriage may be quickly withdrawn by hand. In a modification, the advance movement of the carriage towards the work may be effected by means of a handle provided on the nut f.
