Loaded cables.- In order to counteract skin effect in signalling conductors such as submarine cables, the inductance of the outer strands of the cable is increased. The conductor comprises a central core wound with outer strands, each strand being individually covered with loading material, or the outer surface and sides of each strand may be so covered. The central core may also be loaded. In a cable with lumped loading the outer strands may be insulated from the central core by a layer of copper oxide and coils are inserted in the outer strands of larger inductance than those in the central core. In the construction shown, a conductor comprises a central copper core 1 helically wound with copper tapes 2. Each tape 2 is formed with an adherent coating 3 of loading material applied electrolytically or by spraying before winding the tape on the core 1, or magnetic tape may be wound round the tape 2. A main loading 4 may be placed round the composite conductor. Specifications 184,776. 188,287, 231,534; and 273,638, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], are referred to.
