Abstract

303,935. Aaranson, H. A., and Chemical Waterproofing Corporation. Oct. 20,1927. Waterproofing blocks. - Porous or fibrous materials are hardened and waterproofed by impregnation with a solution comprising pitch dissolved in a non-inflammable solvent in the cold. Equal volumes of coal tar pitch and a suitable solvent such as tri-chlor-ethylene or tetrachlor-ethane are mixed to form a solution of creamy consistency. The solution may be diluted with turpentine, and is applied to the material by immersing the latter therein until saturated. Building-blocks of gypsum, or plaster boards, for example, are allowed to remain in the solution for 15 to 20 minutes and then allowed to drain. The articles are then dried or cured, either at normal temperature, or by heating to 250-350‹ F.
