Abstract

303,405. Paget, F., and Moore, J. R. Oct. 1, 1927. Reversing-gearing, automatic, suitable for washing-machines, comprises an epicyclic train which is moved bodily, to change direction of drive, by means of a connecting-rod and cam. A shaft 14, Fig. 3, constantly drives a wheel 11, which is loose on a countershaft 2 and keyed to the first gear 4 of the epicyclic train. The last or driven gear 10 of that train is secured to the shaft 2. The connecting planet gears 6 are carried by a doubly-coned drum 8 adapted to be moved axially with the shaft 2. The shaft 2 is automatically reciprocated so that the drum 8 is alternately clutched to the wheel 11 for solid forward driving, and engaged with a fixed female cone 9 for reversed driving, a wheel 32 communicating the drives to the machine. The wheel 11 through a sleeve 5 and worm gearing constantly drives a cam 27 which engages bowls 29, Fig. 4, on a rod 28 and so oscillates a crank 19, Fig. 6. This through a shaft 18, pinion 17, and circular rack 16 reciprocates the shaft 2. The rod 28 may be disconnected from the crank 19 by turning a cam 30, which brings a pin 28<b> into a slot 28<a>, so allowing lost motion. To effect reversal by hand, a handle 21, Fig. 7, is moved over a fixed quadrant 22 so operating cam 30, and manual effort is applied to a lever 40 which turns the pinion 17.
