Charging; gases, withdrawing. - A coke oven, having in the roof a number of charging opening and gas offtakes, the latter being utilized for the removal of gases during charging, is supplied, at one point only, with sufficient fuel to reach, before levelling, the roof of the oven, this method of charging necessitating the provision of two gas off takes only. As shown, the charging holes 4, 5 are respectively fed from small and large hoppers 23, 24 which are carried on a truck 20 running on rails 19 and are each provided, at the lower end, with a telescopic sleeve 25 adapted to be lowered on to the holes 4, 5 when the covers 27 are removed. The gas offtakes 6, 7 are arranged at the ends of the oven 1 and are provided with steam jets 15 to assist during charging only, the withdrawal of gases, and with hand-operated doors 13 to provide access to the off takes for cleaning or other purposes. In operation, the contents of the hopper 23 are first charged into the oven and, as shown, form a pile of fuel which does not extend to the roof 3; the hopper 24 is then discharged and this fuel, before being levelled by the bar 28, divides the oven into two compartments each having its own offtake through which gas is withdrawn by the action of the steam jets 15. A modification is described in which three charging holes, with corresponding hoppers, are provided, the central hopper being, in this case, of greater capacity than the other two.
