Envelopes and the like, making.-Apparatus for securing together the two parallel edges of a folded sheet of paper to form an envelope by embossing or crimping them simultaneously, comprises two pairs of toothed, narrow-edged embossing rollers mounted upon two relatively adjustable parallel shafts, the distance between the wheels of each pair being also adjustable, and means for feeding and guiding the folded sheets into the correct position between the wheels. The third edge of the envelope is sealed by embossing in a similar machine provided with one pair of toothed wheels, after the contents have been inserted. The upper pair of rollers A, Figs. 1 and 2, are loosely mounted between collars L on a shaft B supported within end bearings G in housings D, and are adjustable vertically therein by means of wedge-shaped members H disposed beneath the bearings and adapted to be moved inwardly by screws J, a spring K being mounted above each bearing to exert a downward pressure. The lower pair of embossing rollers A are secured upon a shaft C which is supported between bearings fixed. within the housing D and is driven by a pulley W. The lower embossing- rollers engage and drive the upper ones. The folded sheets h may be fed between the embossing rollers by an endless band, or, as shown, they may be fed from a hopper by a feeding-roller Q on a shaft R driven by a, chain and sprocket mechanism from the shaft C. The hopper consists of three angle-brackets N-N<2> mounted upon a fixed base M to form three sides of an enclosure the dimensions of which can be varied by altering the position of the brackets. The fourth side of the hopper is formed by a downward extension 0<1> on a bracket 0 which is mounted on a transverse upper rail P, the space between the lower end of the portion O<1> and the feeding roller being adjustable to form a passage through which only one sheet can be fed. Extensions V on the brackets N<1>, N<2> guide the'papers in the correct position between the embossing rollers. As the papers emerge from between the rollers their leading edge passes between upper and lower supporting guides Z. The embossed band d.
