Abstract

301,573. Quick, W., Thomas, S. E., and Berwick, F. W. Sept. 14, 1927. Sashes balanced by springs; vehicle-window opening and closing apparatus.-Sliding sash balancing or regulating devices, particularly for vehicle windows, of the kind having articulated levers controlled by springs are provided with an auxiliary controlling spring 13 adapted to assist or oppose the springs 5 and thereby to produce a uniform balancing force on the window sash 14. The limbs 7 of the levers are bent at the pivot 8 and connected by a pin and slot to a lever 10 which is removably pivoted at 15 to the sash rail. The spring 9 is so connected to the ends of the levers or attachments thereon as to oppose or assist the action of the springs 5 according as it acts above or below the dead centre with respect to the pivot 8. The levers 6 are connected by toothed sectors 3 which may be locked by a. movable pinion 17 adapted to engage both sectors and mounted on a rotatable arm 16 which may be moved by a cam or the like. An operating handle and pinion gearing with one sector may be provided. In a modification, the upper levers are cranked and connected by the auxiliary spring, the balancing springs being connected to both levers at the central pivots. A single tension spring connecting the pivots of the pairs of levers may replace the spiral balancing springs 5.
