Abstract

301,427. Terwagne, A. J. Nov. 29, 1927, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Refuse, dust-bin, treating; manures.- Refuse is first dried and then heated to a higher temperature to yield combustible gases and carbon. The furnaces used are of truncated conical form and elliptic cross-section and are arranged obliquely so that the weight of the material aids its discharge. The drying furnaces are heated to a temperature not higher than 120‹ C, gases being withdrawn by suction and delivered to the combustion hearth. The refuse falls from the drying furnaces to a pit from which it is lifted by a bucket elevator to a screening drum. Material which does not pass through the screen is delivered into an electromagnetic conveyer band, which retains pieces of iron, and thence to a hand-sorting band. The material left on the sorting band consists mainly of cellulose and is passed to carbonization or distillation furnaces, heated to a temperature of 350‹ to 400‹ C. The gases from these furnaces are in part condensed and the non-condensable portion is used to heat the furnaces. The water used for spraying the charcoal will dissolve potash which can be recovered and added to the powder passing through the drum screen, which is stated to have a fertilizing value.
