Manures. - Organic refuse, for example slaughterhouse refuse, dead animals and damaged food, supported on a grating 9 in a chamber 1, is converted into manure powder by fermentation, promoted by air supplied from a compressor 10 to the space beneath the grating and through vertical columns 16, 17, 18 with downwardly projecting nozzles 19 to the interior of the heap. Each column 16 has an independent valvecontrolled air-supply pipe. Sewage liquid is lifted from a tank 4 by a pump 7 and sprayed over the material from a pipe 5. Excess liquid draining into the space below the grating is returned to the tank 4 through a pipe 8. Gas generated is removed from the top of the chamber 1 through a pipe 20 and from the bottom through a pipe 24 by an exhauster 22.
