Yarns, treating with liquids; yarns, mercerizing.-The rapid and complete wetting of natural and artificial cellulosic materials in the mercerizing and like treatments with alkali is ensured by the addition to the alkali bath of a small proportion (of the order of 1 per cent by volume) of a mixture comprising on the one hand a homologue of phenol (e.g. a cresol or a xylenol), and on the other an aliphatic or aromatic-aliphatic alcohol containing not less than four carbon atoms (e.g. benzyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, synthetic alcohols b.p. 120-200‹ C., produced by hydrogenation of carbon oxides). Mixtures containing 85-99 per cent of homologous phenol or mixtures of phenols are preferred, the remainder being made up of one or more of the alcohols defined. Specification 305,664 is referred to.
