Loud-speakers; diaphragms.-In a loud-speaker of the large diaphragm type, the coil or other drive is placed where the forces opposing motion, viz., air-pressure and restoring force due to mounting, are greatest.. The coil 13. Figs. 1, 3, wound on the cylinder 12 is fixed to the edge of the diaphragm 1, which may be conical, spherical, hyperbolic, parabolic or of similar form, and is immersed in an annular gap 17 between the pole-pieces of a pot-magnet energized by winding 11. The diaphragm is suspended by a resilient band 3, Fig. 2, threaded through eyelets 4 and 5 attached to a stiffening annulus 2 and wooden rings 6 some distance from its periphery, the gap being closed by an annulus 7 of flexible material, not under tension. In a modification the centre of the diaphragm is supported in addition to the periphery, and driven by a separate coil and magnet system.
