Abstract
306,138. Commercial Solvents Corporation, (Assignees of Wheeler, M. C., and Goodale, C. de L.). Feb. 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Acetone.-Carbohydrates are fermented by the butyl-acetonic fermentation for the production of n-butyl alcohol, acetone and ethyl alcohol in a continuous manner in a number of fermenters, say 3 to 5. connected in series. Sterile mash is placed in the first fermenter and inoculated; then more mash is added until the whole series has been filled by overflow. After this, further additions may be made to the first fermenter, either continuously or discontinuously, and corresponding amounts are allowed to overflow from the last fermenter; or the last fermenter, or each, may be cut off from the preceding one while a part of the liquid is withdrawn therefrom, the corresponding amount being then transferred to it from the preceding fermenter. The fermenters may be on the same or different levels, and agitation devices may be provided to break up and disperse the "head " formed through the fermenting medium just before the latter is discharged from a fermenter.
