Thermionic generators ; thermionic heterodyne receivers.- A frequency-changing or modulating circuit comprises a negative-resistance four-electrode valve 3 arranged so that its inner grid constitute an output electrode and its outer grid an input electrode, means 1 for applying a modulating-frequency or the frequency to be changed (which may itself be modulated by signals) to the input circuit 2, and means for maintaining the output circuit 6 in oscillation at a different frequency so that the amplitude of the oscillations is controlled in accordance with the first frequency. A reaction coil coupled to the input circuit is connected between the anode and cathode of the valve. When the voltages of the anode and grids and the filament emission are adjusted as described in Specification 252,079, the output circuit oscillates at its natural frequency.
