Abstract

291,576. Barjot, H. M. R. April 14, 1927. Gases, separating mixtures of; diffusion apparatus for gases.-Relates to apparatus for the separation of hydrogen from gaseous mixtures. such as water gas, coke oven gas &c., by diffusion through porous media and consists in the provision of several series of elementary apparatus so arranged that the partially dehydrogenized mixture from the first apparatus in Each series passes successively through the apparatus in the name series, while the gas richer in hydrogen collected in the first apparatus of a series passes into the first apparatus of the next series. The partially dehydrogenized mixture leaving the last apparatus of a series may be returned to the first apparatus of a preceding series, and, in the same series, the gas richer in hydrogen is returned to the preceding member of the series. Fig. 1 shows the construction of a. single member of a series in which a casing R is divided by the porous walls 2 into a central supply compartment C and two lateral compartments c. The gaseous mixture enters by a pipe 3 and leaves by a pipe i., and the mixture richer in hydrogen is drawn from the compartments c by pumps p through pipes h, passing to further separating- apparatus. The two pipes h may be connected and operated by a single pump. In a complete installation, Fig. 4, having four series of separating-apparatus. enriched gas from the first member R1 of the first series is passed by the pump p to the supply compartment of the first member R2 of the second series and so on. The mixture poorer in hydrogen passes, in each series, successively to the supply compartments of the following members of the series, e.g., in the first series successively to the members R1<1>. R1<11>, R1<111>. The richer gas from the compartments c of the second member of a series is returned by pumps p1<1> to the supply compartment of the first member, that from the third to the second and so on. The gas leaving the central compartments of the last members of all the series may be returned by the pipe 11 and the pump P' to the first member R1. In a modification. a single apparatus is divided into a number of compartments by horizontal porous diaphragms, the gaseous mixture being fed to the central compartment under pressure. The mixture richer in hydrogen gradually rises through the diaphragms to the uppermost compartment, the poorer gases remaining between the diaphragms being passed to the next lower compartment by pumps arranged in connecting pipes. A central rotating shaft bearing ventilating blades may be provided.
