Abstract
296,897. Newton, N. B. Sept. 17, 1927. Fluid-friction vibrationdampers of the type in which a cylinder and piston co-operate to form a liquid pressure chamber on each side of the piston with restricted transfer passages, are provided with a compensating chamber or chambers containing compress - ible fluid and connected to one or both of the pressure chambers through a restricted passage. The liquid and the compressible fluid being in direct surface contact. The cylinder b and the piston a may be connected respectively to the axle and frame of a vehicle by connections including rubber or like members p, p<1>. The two chambers thus formed above and below the piston are connected by restricted passages a<1>, a<2>, which may be adjustable and may be provided with one way valves. The upper chamber, which is of less capacity than the lower chamber owing to the piston rod e, is connected to an upper compensating chamber m containing some air by means of the annular space between the piston rod e and the opening in the partition n. The piston rod e passes through a stuffing-box which includes gland leathers g, g' arranged so as to resist internal pressure. The cylinder head also carries a packing ring j<2> for a protecting tubular casing r movable with the piston e. Owing to the restricted passage for liquid past the partition n, the air in the compensating chamber m does not act as an elastic cushion. In a modification a gland leather is arranged between the partition n and the piston rod e to prevent air being carried downwards by the piston rods. The partition is in this case provided with small holes
