Abstract
294,868. Anglo-American Corporation of South Africa, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1927, [Convention date]. Ammonium compounds containing metals.- Copper is extracted from cupiferous ores &c. by means of an ammoniacal solvent, such as a solution of ammonium carbonate, by a process whereby the extraction can be carried out with apparatus of compact form: without exposure of the solvent solution and which avoids undue dilution of the solution. The oupiferous material is wet ground to a slime pulp, of which the greater part will pass through a 200 mesh screen. The pulp is then de-watered, conveniently by filtration under pressure and preferably also by forcing air through the cake formed during the filtering operation. The de-watered pulp, containing less than 20 per cent of water, is then treated by a solution of cupric ammonium carbonate by forcing the solvent through the cake in the filter-press. Loss of ammonia is minimized owing to the solution being enclosed. When the solvent action is completed, the residual solution is displaced by means of air under pressure, or a wash liquid or both and the cake treated with steam to recover ammonia. The copper may be recovered from the solution by any suitable means.
