Blocks and the like acting on drums. -In a vehicle brake in which the shoes are expanded by a cam in the form of a journal a in which slides a pushpiece b, the shoe d<2> remains stationary at the commencement of the braking action by contacting with an abutment a<1> and a pin h whilst the shoe d<1> comes into contact with the drum m and forms a servo-brake to operate the shoe d<2>. The shoes d<1>, d<2> are freely pivoted at c and slidably engage the disc h' through stirrups u : the pin h fixed to the disc works in a slot g in the shoe d<2> and forms a pivot for the shoe when the brakes are applied in backward movement of the vehicle. A spring r<1> draws the shoes together against the abutment a<1> and a spring k maintains the shoe d<2> in contact with the pin h to centralize the shoes. In braking with the drum revolving in the forward direction F, Fig. 1, the journal a is turned and the tapered end b' of the push-piece moves the shoe d<1> into contact with the drum which drags the shoe round with it to force the shoe d<2>, through the joint e, also into contact with the drum. In braking with the drum revolving in the reverse direction F<1>, the shoe d<1> is drawn in the direction of the arrow and forces the push-pieces b through the journal a to force the shoe d<2> against the drum, the shoe pivoting on the pin h.
