Abstract
286,984. Carpmael, K., and Carpmael, K. S., (Representatives of Carpmacl, W.), (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 10, 1926. Quaternary ammonium compounds are obtained by the action of sulphuric or arylsulphonic alkyl esters on halogen-substituted tertiary amines of the benzene or naphthalene series, e.g. the products referred to in Specification 288,665. The reaction may be effected in a solvent such as toluene or chlorobenzene. In examples, 3-chloro- 4-dimethylaminotoluene is treated with ptoluene-sulphonic methyl ester; 1-chloro-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene with dimethyl sulphate ; o-chloro-dimethylaniline with dimethyl sulphate; 3:3<1>-dichloro- (or dibromo-)-4:4'-tetramethyldiamino-diphenylmethane with dimethyl (or diethyl) sulphate.
