Levels, regulating; indicators actuated by floats.-The radiator of an internal - combustion engine is provided with means for indicating the level and temperature, and also for maintaining the level. The filler cap 2 of the radiator 1 carries an overflow pipe 4, the upper end of which is visible through windows 10 supported in a frame 3, while the space within the indicator casing communicates with the radiator through an annular passage 7. The pipe 4 discharges into an overflow tank when the water expands in the radiator on becoming heated, and the overflow is drawn back on contraction of the water in the radiator to maintain the level. In a modification, Fig. 6, a glass dome 16 is employed, and a thermometer 17 is clipped to the pipe 4 so that the temperature of the water is indicated. In another modification (Fig. 7, not shown) the overflow tank may form part of the radiator, and is connected to the main body by a transparent U-tube. If the overflow tank is omitted, the water may expand into an upwardly projecting transparent tube, which thus indicates level and temperature. The overflow tank may Le provided with means for preventing disturbance if the water boils in the radiator. In another modification, Fig. 9, the top of the overflow pipe may be within the filling cap and not visible, while the level is indicated by a float 35 having a rod 36 carrying an index plate 37 which is visible through an opening 10<a> in the side of the casing 3. The level indicator may be combined with or replaced by a temperature indicator. The overflow tank may be connected to the exhaust pipe of the engine so that the suction in the radiator when cooling is assisted by a positive pressure on the water in the tank.
