Abstract

286,211. Euromerican Cellulose Products Corporation, (Assignees of Dorner, B.). Feb. 28, 1927, [Convention date]. Pulp, preparation of; waste products, treatment and utilization of.-In the treatment of straw and analogous material such as cornstalks, bagasse, and the like, to obtain cellulose and other products therefrom, the material, after being chopped and shredded, is sieved to remove leaf rubbish, corn cob rubbish, corn grain, and the like, which may be used as stock food, and is then subjected to leaching with cold or warm water to remove water solubles such as sugars, mineral salts and the like, then disintegrated and washed in a heater having a rotary sieve. A further heating takes place after which the material is cooked with caustic soda at a moderate temperature to dissolve out the silica. The cooking in caustic soda is repeated, a stronger alkali being used, and the temperature is kept sufficiently low to avoid caramelization of the pentosans and the other sugars present. The waste liquors are treated with acid to precipitate the organic materials which may also be used for stock food, and the caustic soda is recovered in the usual manner.
