Abstract
284,900. Eaton, W. S. May 2, 1927. Chromium, depositing; metals, removing; metals, pickling; preparing surfaces.-Chromium is deposited from a bath containing chromic acid and an alkaline content consisting mainly of sodium hydroxide. A suitable alkaline content consists of sodium hydroxide 94 per cent, sodium sulphate 2 per cent, sodium carbonate 2 per cent, and sodium chloride and impurities 2 per cent; one ounce of the alkali material in a dry state is added to 1 gallon of water and one pound of chromic acid crystals. The cathode is cleaned before plating by immersion in an alkaline bath while connected to a carbon plate, graphite rod or an iron member to form a couple. It is then rinsed and immersed in the plating bath while still wet. The plating temperature may be 110‹-130‹ F., the voltage 5-10 and the current density 1-2 amps. per sq. inch. The chromium surface may be removed by connecting the article as anode.
