Abstract

Dec. 29, 1926 Bottling.-In a counter-pressure bottling-machine having controlling means of the type described in Specification 17296/12, the bottle is freed from its air content by admitting carbon dioxide gas at a pressure less than that obtaining in the liquid reservoir preparatory to the filling operation. A liquid reservoir a comprises a bottom casting d insulated by a layer of spongy rubber f protected by a thin copper sheet g, and an annular ring b similarly protected on its outer surface. The bottom d is formed with a central aperture closed by a fittiug h. Liquid is supplied to the reservoir by a pipe m depending from its cover c and surrounding a pipe i connected to a supply of carbon dioxide maintained at a pressure less than that of the gas in the reservoir a above the liquid. The pipe i leads into a lower chamber j from which the gas passes through pipes 2 to the filling heads, each of which is provided with a control cock 3 of the type described in Specification 17296/12 but formed wtih additional ports and tappets 7 for the introduction of the gas. The cock is shown in Fig. 5 in the liquid filling position. In operation, low pressure gas from the chamber j enters the control cock by a port 25, passes along a passage 24 in the central rotatable members 18 thereof, and down the filling pipe 5 into the bottle 4. The member 18 is then turned to shut off the lower pressure gas supply and introduce the full counter pressure from rhe tank a, this movement opening the passages 21, 22, 23 and an annular space 16 around the filling tube 5. A further rotation of the member 18 bring it to the liquid filling position, the ports 19, 20 communicating with the tube 5 and the gas escaping through the passages 14, 15, 17, 26 and the pipe 11 to the reservoir j.
