Abstract

284,024. Whitehead Torpedo Co., Ltd., and Jones, A. E. Oct. 22, 1926. Connecting-rods.-In a compressed air, radial cylinder engine of the kind described in Specification 228,313, [Class 122 (iii), Steam-engines, Kinds &c.], and wherein a ball bearing is arranged between the connecting-rods and the crank-pin, segmental bearing-members B<2> fixed to the connecting-rod extend from one side to the other of the outer race B<3> of the ball bearing, and at each side slidably engages with the webs of the crank by means of projecting portions B<5> which enter recesses therein. The shaft has two crank pins C<1> with a central web C<2> detachably connected to them by splines C<6> and set screws C<7>. The pins are made integral with end webs C<3>. The bearings are lubricated under pressure. Oil is supplied at inlet B<6>x and passes through a yielding connection between the hollow driven spindle D and the shaft to a passage B' leading to a chamber B<8> in the web C<2> from which passages b<8> lead to the hollow crank pins which have holes b<7> leading to the ball bearings and nozzles b<9> leading to the parts B<5>. The flexible connection comprises bushes D<1>, D<2> connected by dogs, pressed apart by a spring, and screwed into the end of the spindle D and shaft web C<3> respectively. The bushes have curved seats for the parts of a hollow member D<3>. Specification 280,024, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for], also is referred to.
