Abstract

273,327. Melliand, M., (Assignee of Dubac, A.). June 25, 1926, [Convention date] . Liquids, treating with.-In a process for improving products such as fabrics of vegetable fibres, the material is subjected to two or more interdependent treatments with concentrated bases such as mercerizing liquors, the liquors being used alternately hot and cold in any described sequence, the action being stopped in each case immediately after the structural alterations of the filaments desired have been effected. In the treatment of cotton materials, the ordinary mercerizing processes may be used and may precede or follow treatment. according to Specification 254,695. In an example, ordinary cotton muslin is mercerized in the usual manner to form lamp shade lining, then treated for three minutes with caustic soda lye (43 per cent NaOH) at 92‹ C. Immediately after the structural change is effected, the lye is displaced by boiling water, and, should the product not be satisfactory, it is impregnated for a short time with 25‹ Be. caustic soda lye at 18‹ C., this in turn being removed without stretching the material. If the lye employed for the hot treatment is of higher concentration for example 60 per cent NaOH, the feel of the material becomes somewhat fuller.
