Abstract
271,875. Guy, B. A. May 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Indicators actuated by heat sensitive elements; indicators, electric.-A water gauge suitable for a high pressure boiler comprises a metal tube 1 surrounded by an electric heating coil 3 which causes that part of the tube above water level to become incandescent, while the part below remains cooler due to contact with the water. In a modification, the gauge tube may have short projecting branches each having an electric heater, and enclosed in a glass tube containing a substance which has a different appearance in solid or liquid form. In another modification, electric lamps may be placed in recesses in the gauge tube, and these vary in brilliancy according as they are opposite the steam or water space. In another modification, short tubes project from the gauge tube into 'another vertical glass tube but are closed at that end. The glass tube contains a liquid which boils in contact with those cross tubes containing water, but not in contact with those tubes which contain steam. The temperature differences may alternatively be indicated by pyrometers, thermometers, thermo-electric apparatus, &c. The heating of the gauge tube may be by furnace gases.
