Abstract

Ordnance design. - Electric contacts or an electric coil or like magnetic field is provided on a gun to transfer to the fuze of a projectile at the moment of its discharge an amount of electrical energy which determines the time of operation of the fuze. Further electric energy may be imparted to the fuze by a battery or generator in the projectile. As shown, a coil c, Fig. 1, is arranged with a gas deflector b at the muzzle of a gun a, and is connected through an adjustable resistance d and a current indicator e to a source of current f; and the projectile g, Fig. 2, is surrounded by a coil h connected to another coil i and through a switch t to a condenser k. When the projectile is discharged, the coil h in passing through the coil c is energized and loads the condenser k through the switch t which is atl that period closed. The coil h also supplies current to the solenoid i which sucks its core l up, lifting a lever o with a rack p, and causing a switch member q carried by the rack p to be swung into operative position. During the flight of the projectile after the coil h has ceased to be influenced by the coil c and the switch t has become open, the rack p is retracted with the lever o and solenoid core l by a spring m; at the end of this movement which is delayed by gearing u and a vane v, the switch member g closes the circuit s<1> of the condenser k through the electric igniter r. The strength of the current in the coil c determines the throw of the rack p and therefore the time the fuze takes to operate. An additional adjustable resistance d<1> may be provided to control the strength of this current from a distance.
