Winch-actuated load-handling machines with guided carriers. -A portable straddle hoist for raising a heavy load such as a stack of metal sheets can be transported on a lifting-truck, and for this purpose is provided on each of its four legs with a dog 90, Figs. 6, 6A, which can be. swung round a bar 93 into transverse position over the platform of the truck T and is locked by the upward thrust thereof into a notch 94 or 95. The hoist can be carried on the truck into a railway van, lowered onto its castors, and wheeled into position over a load, which it hoists and lowers onto the truck for removal. The hoist may be removed on the truck along with the lead, the dogs 90 in this case seating themselves on a, portable platform on the truck and engaging the upepr notches 95. The hoist, shown in side and end views in Figs. 1, 3, is a framework of angle and channel iron strengthened by gussets, and the hoisting mechanism, consisting of an electric motor driving four cable drums 59 through bevel, worm and chain reduction gearing, is carried on an overhead platform 33. To prevent overwinding, a lever 71 when struck by the load restores the controller shaft 67 from winding to neutral position. The castors 76 are spring-mounted and provided with pins 85 for locking them in the straight-running position. Under the weight of a load the springs are compressed and the hoist rests solidly on its footplates 22. A modified form of castor for the rear feet is shown in Fig. 8. The legs of the hoist are narrow, to pass along narrow aisles between stacks of sheets, and the castors 76, the dogs 90, and the lifting-blocks 63 lie or can lie within their width.
