Abstract

276,934. Tugwood, R. J., (Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.). Nov. 25, 1926. Endless-chain machines.-A method of mining coal, which may conveniently be carried out by the machine described in Specification 273,157, consists in cutting a kerf along a coal face by means of a coal-cutting machine comprising a main frame 1 adapted to travel longitudinally of the coal face and a plurality of kerf cutters, for example the chain cutters 40, 48, 51. The undercut material is then broken down, and the machine is traversed in the reverse direction, the drive of the kerf cutters being reversed by suitable gear in the machine so that they operate progressively to shift the material laterally of the coal face. The broken coal falls clear of the machine on to a long-wall conveyer comprising a frame 68, a floor plate 69, and conveying arms. 70 which, on their return path, are moved to an upright position as shown in the Figure.
