Abstract

A multi-sensory menu device 100 is disclosed that comprises a plastic menu providing Braille 102 and image 103 representation of menu items, a speaker 104 for playing an audio version of the menu, and an olfactory element 105 that diffuses scent or fragrance to a user. The olfactory element may include a scent reservoir having a lid 204 that may be opened or closed. The speaker may be configured to record and playback a user’s voice recording of one or more menu items.

MULTI-SENSORY MENU DEVICE
FIELD
The invention relates to a multi-sensory menu device.
BACKGROUND
The field of assistive technology has seen significant advancements in recent years, with a focus on improving the quality of life for individuals with impairments, disabilities, or communication barriers. One area of particular interest is the development of menu devices that cater to the unique needs of these individuals, enabling them to access and interact with content in a more convenient and user-friendly manner.

SUMMARY
In general terms, the present disclosure is directed to a menu device that provides a multi-sensory experience for individuals with impairments, disabilities, or communication barriers. It comprises a plastic menu with braille and images, a speaker for audio, and an olfactory element that recreates the scents of a full meal. Advantageously, the invention addresses the limitations of existing menu devices by providing a multi-sensory approach that combines visual, auditory, and olfactory stimuli to enhance user experience and accessibility for individuals with impairments, disabilities, or communication barriers.
According to an aspect of the invention, there is provided a multi-sensory menu device for individuals with impairments, disabilities, or communication barriers. The device comprises a plastic menu with braille and images, providing tactile and visual stimulation; a speaker, enabling users to hear the menu; and an olfactory element that recreates full meal scents.
Optionally, the olfactory element comprises at least one scent pot.
Optionally, the at least one scent pot comprises a reservoir configured to hold a volume of scent infused oil and a diffuser that may be opened and closed.
Optionally, the diffuser comprises a rotationally fixed base and a rotatable upper, and each of the base and upper comprise at least one opening which are aligned when the diffuser is opened and not aligned when the diffuser is closed.
Optionally, the images are displayed via a digital display.
Optionally, the multi-sensory menu further comprises a microphone and non-volatile memory for storing sounds recorded by the microphone.
Optionally, the multi-sensory menu further comprises a record button and a play button. The record button is configured to activate the microphone to enable recording of a user's voice and the play button is configured to play back a user's voice that has been recorded and stored in the non-volatile memory.
Optionally, the multi-sensory menu further comprises a plurality of selection buttons associated with respective menu items. When actuated, each selection button causes the record and/or play buttons to be associated with the selected menu item.
Optionally, the multi-sensory menu further comprises an audio loop for direct connection to a user's hearing aid.
Optionally, the multi-sensory menu further comprises a wireless communication module configured to enable transfer of data to/from a remote device.
Optionally, the multi-sensory menu further comprises user identification means configured to identify a user and retrieve user preferences from the non-volatile memory and/or a remote device or server.
Optionally, the user identification means comprises a barcode reader, camera, fingerprint reader, or keypad for login data entry.
Optionally, the images and braille are laser engraved or machined into the surface of the plastic menu.
Optionally, the images are hand drawn onto a cleanable surface of the plastic menu.

The scent pot comprises a reservoir configured to hold a volume of scent infused oil and a diffuser that may be opened and closed. The diffuser comprises a rotationally fixed base and a rotatable upper. Each of the base and upper comprise at least one opening which are aligned when the diffuser is opened and not aligned when the diffuser is closed.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Figure 1 illustratively shows a multi-sensory menu device 100 according to the present disclosure. The device comprises a plastic menu 101 with braille 102 and images 103, providing tactile and visual stimulation. Additionally, the device has a speaker 104, enabling users to hear the menu, and an olfactory element 105 that recreates full meal scents.
Advantageously, the multi-sensory menu device 100 offers a comprehensive and immersive experience for users, particularly catering to those with visual impairments. The braille 102, which is meticulously designed and embossed on the menu, allows visually impaired users to read the menu through touch, enabling them to independently explore the menu items without relying on external assistance. The braille 102 may also be customized to include different languages or regional variations, ensuring that the device is accessible to a diverse range of users.
The images 103, which may be high-resolution photographs or detailed illustrations, provide visual cues for users with partial or full vision. These images can be strategically placed next to the corresponding braille text, allowing users to easily associate the visual representation with the menu item. The images 103 may also be designed to include various colour contrasts and brightness levels, catering to users with different degrees of visual ability and colour perception.
The speaker 104, which may be equipped with audio technology such as adjustable volume controls, further enhances the user experience by providing clear and concise auditory information about the menu items. This feature caters to those with varying levels of hearing ability, including users with hearing impairments who may require higher volume levels or direct audio input to their hearing aids. The speaker 106 may also offer multiple language options, ensuring that the device is accessible to a diverse range of users.

In some embodiments, the multi-sensory menu device 100 comprises at least one scent pot 106 (see Figure 2) as part of the olfactory element 105.

The scent pot 106 can be filled with various scent-infused oils that correspond to the different menu items, providing users with a realistic olfactory representation of the meals. This feature not only enhances the user experience but also helps users make more informed decisions about their menu choices based on their scent preferences.
In some embodiments, the multi-sensory menu device 100 comprises a scent pot 106 with a reservoir 107 configured to hold a volume of scent infused oil and a diffuser 108 that may be opened and closed.
Advantageously, the reservoir 107 and diffuser 108 design allows for efficient storage and controlled release of the scent-infused oils. In some embodiments, the diffuser 108 comprises a rotationally fixed base 109 and a rotatable upper 110, wherein each of the base 109 and upper 110 comprise at least one opening 111, 112 which are aligned when the diffuser 108 is opened and not aligned when the diffuser 108 is closed.
Advantageously, the rotationally fixed base 109 and rotatable upper 110 design of the diffuser 108 allows for precise control over the release of the scent-infused oils. By aligning the openings 111, 112, users can easily open the diffuser 108 to release the desired amount of scent. Conversely, when the openings 111, 112 are not aligned, the diffuser 108 is effectively closed, preventing the scent from escaping and maintaining the potency of the scent-infused oils.
In some embodiments, the images 103 are displayed via a digital display.
Advantageously, the use of a digital display allows for greater flexibility and customization of the visual elements of the multi-sensory menu device 100. In some embodiments, the device (100) is powered by an internal battery that may be recharged via a USB-C cable or mains AC adaptor, for example.
In some embodiments, the images 103 and braille 102 are laser engraved or machined into the surface of the plastic menu 101.
Advantageously, the use of laser engraving or machining to create the images 103 and braille 102 ensures a high level of precision and durability. Figure 2 illustratively shows a scent pot 200 according to the present disclosure. The scent pot 200 comprises a reservoir 201 configured to hold a volume of scent infused oil and a diffuser 202 that may be opened and closed. The diffuser 202 comprises a rotationally fixed base 203 and a rotatable upper 204, wherein each of the base 203 and upper 204 comprise at least one opening 205, 206 which are aligned when the diffuser 202 is opened and not aligned when the diffuser 202 is closed. The reservoir 201 comprises at least one inwardly facing projection 207 and the base 203 comprises at least one cut-out 208 configured to engage an inwardly facing projection 207 to prevent rotation of the base 203 relative to the reservoir 201. Both the base 203 and upper 204 comprises concentric mounting holes 203a, 204a through which a fastener 209 may be inserted. The fastener 209 in the illustrated embodiment is threaded and engages a corresponding threaded boss 210 in the reservoir 201. The upper 204 is therefore able to rotate around the fastener 209 relative to the reservoir 201 and the base 203.
Advantageously, the scent pot 200 design allows for precise control over the release of scent-infused oils, ensuring a consistent and enjoyable olfactory experience for users. The rotationally fixed base 203 and rotatable upper 204 design enables users to easily open and close the diffuser 202, allowing for efficient regulation of the scent release. It will be understood that the term "rotationally fixed base" as used herein may refer to a stationary support structure or platform, typically made of durable materials such as plastic or metal, that securely holds and positions the various components of the multi-sensory menu device, while allowing for controlled rotation or movement of specific elements as needed for user interaction.

Claims (15)

  1. CLAIMS1. A multi-sensory menu device for individuals with impairments, disabilities, or communication barriers, comprising: a) a plastic menu with braille and images, providing tactile and visual stimulation; b) a speaker, enabling users to hear the menu; and c) an olfactory element that recreates full meal scents.
  2. 2. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 1, wherein the olfactory element comprises at least one scent pot.
  3. 3. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 2, where the at least one scent pot comprises a reservoir configured to hold a volume of scent infused oil and a diffuser that may be opened and closed.
  4. 4. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 3, wherein the diffuser comprises a rotationally fixed base and a rotatable upper, wherein each of the base and upper comprise at least one opening which are aligned when the diffuser is opened and not aligned when the diffuser is closed.
  5. 5. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 1, wherein the images are displayed via a digital display.
  6. 6. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 1 further comprising a microphone and non-volatile memory for storing sounds recorded by the microphone.
  7. 7. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 6 further comprising a record button for activating the microphone to enable recording of a user's voice and a play button for playing back a user's voice that has been recorded and stored in the non-volatile memory.
  8. 8. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 8 further comprising a plurality of selection buttons associated with respective menu items, each selection button, when actuated, causes the record and/or play buttons to be associated with the selected menu item.

  13. 13. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 1 wherein the images and braille are laser engraved or machined into the surface of the plastic menu.
  14. 14. A multi-sensory menu according to claim 1 wherein the images are hand drawn onto a cleanable surface of the plastic menu.
  15. 15. A scent pot comprising a reservoir configured to hold a volume of scent infused oil and a diffuser that may be opened and closed, wherein the diffuser comprises a rotationally fixed base and a rotatable upper, wherein each of the base and upper comprise at least one opening which are aligned when the diffuser is opened and not aligned when the diffuser is closed.
