Description of Embodiments
[32] It should be noted in the following description that like or the same reference numerals in different embodiments denote the same or similar features.
[33] Figures 1 to 8 show a boxing bag frame assembly 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The frame assembly 10 comprises a rectangular perimeter frame 12 formed by perimeter frame members 14, the perimeter frame 12 being raised from the ground and supported by support posts 16, and a movable cross member 18 which extends between two opposing perimeter frame members 14a. Both ends of the cross member 18 include roller assemblies 20 which are movable along the frame members 14a, thus allowing the cross member 18 to be movable along the frame members 14a. The cross member 18 further includes a bag mount 22 which also includes a roller assembly 50, such that the bag mount 22 is movable along the cross member 18. The movability of the bag mount 22 and the cross member 18 allows a boxing bag or similar mounted to the bag mount 22 to pivot, rotate, or swing relative to the bag mount 22 as well as move in the space within perimeter frame 12 in a first direction and a second direction perpendicular to the first direction.
[34] The perimeter frame 12 comprises four perimeter frame members 14 in a rectangular arrangement, designated as opposite and parallel first members 14a and opposite and parallel second members 14b. Each frame member 14 in the example is a round tube with ends thereof connected to corner connectors 30. Other cross-section shapes of the frame member 14 are possible such as rectangular. The corner connectors 30 comprise three sockets 31 in a 90° orientation to each other. The ends of two adjacent frame members 14 are received in two of the sockets 31 to connect the frame members 14 in a 90° orientation. A support post 16 extends vertically down from the third socket 31 of each corner connector 30, the support post 16 being covered with padding 17. As also shown in Figure 6, first brace members 32 extend between the frame members 14 adjacent each respective corner connector 30.
Second brace members 34 extend between each first brace member 32 and its adjacent support post 16. Tension cables 36 extend between the support posts 16 providing additional support for the frame assembly 10. The support posts 16 are about 200 to 240 cm in height thus supporting the perimeter frame 12 from the ground over a user's head.
[35] The cross member 18 extends between the two opposing frame members 14a and is parallel to the second frame members 14b. Ends of the cross member 18 include roller assemblies 20 which are movable along the frame members 14a. The roller assemblies 20 in the embodiment comprise shaped plates 40 with roller wheels 42 at an upper portion thereof. The plates 40 are shaped to extend around opposite sides of the respective frame member 14a with the roller wheels 42 engaging the upper portion of the frame member 14a.
The end of the cross member 18 is attached to a lower portion of the plates 40. The roller assemblies 20 thus allow the cross member 18 to be movable along the frame members 14a, in a direction between the second frame members 14b. The cross member 18 is thus movable in a lateral direction between the second frame members 14b and remains substantially parallel to the second frame members 14b. Springs 46 are provided at the ends of the frame members 14a which stop or cushion the roller assemblies 20 from hitting the first brace members 32.
[36] The cross member 18 further includes a bag mount 22 which also includes a roller assembly 50, which is similar to the roller assemblies 20, such that the bag mount 22 is movable along the cross member 18. The bag mount 22 also includes shaped plates 40 with roller wheels 42 at an upper portion thereof. The plates 40 are shaped to extend around opposite sides of the cross member 18 with the roller wheels 42 engaging the upper portion of the cross member 18. The bag mount 22 includes a bag pivot attachment 52 which extends downwardly. A boxing bag attached to the bag mount 22 is thus movable along the cross member 18, in a direction between the first frame members 14a. Springs 56 are provided at the ends of the cross member 18 which stop or cushion the bag mount 22 from hitting the roller assemblies 20.
[37] The roller assemblies 20 and 50 thus allow a boxing bag mounted to the bag mount 22 to move in a space generally within the perimeter frame 12, along a first direction between the first frame members 14a (via the bag mount 22 moving along the cross member 18) and a second direction between the second frame members 14b (via the cross member 18 moving along the first frame members 14a between the second frame members 14b), with the first direction being perpendicular to the second direction. The boxing bag can also pivot, rotate, or swing relative to the bag mount 22.
[38] Resilient elastic bands 70 are provided to extend from the bag mount 22 towards each respective support post 16 or second brace member 34, the elastic bands 70 providing resistance to movement of the bag mount 22 in the first and second directions. This allows the boxing bag to move back towards the center of the frame assembly 10 for example after being hit. The resistance is adjustable by using bands 70 with different thicknesses or strengths, which allows biased movement of the bag mount 22 if desired.
[39] Figure 7 shows a boxing bag 100 mounted to a modified mount 110 such as that described in Applicants Australian Patent Application 2020277189, the contents of which are fully incorporated herein by reference. The modified mount 110 adds rotatable extension attachments 112 at the height of the boxing bag 100. The boxing bag 100 can thus move in both the first direction 80 and the second direction 84. For example, when a boxer hits the boxing bag 100 with a straight punch, the boxing bag can swing backwards and move backwards relative to the boxer as the bag mount 22 can move within the perimeter frame 12.
When the boxer hits the boxing bag with a hook punch, the boxing bag can swing sideways and also move sideways relative to the boxer as the bag mount 22 can move within the perimeter frame 12. The elastic bands 70 can then return the bag mount to its original position.
[40] Figure 8 shows the frame assembly 10 with additional fitness attachments, such as a speedball mount 120 attached to a support post, a pull up bar 122 mounted to a second frame member 14b, and a floor to ceiling bag 124 mounted to the other frame member 14b.
[41] The frame assembly 10 can be made into a rectangular shape, or more preferably a square shape. The size of the assembly is customizable and can be offered as a kit where the user is provided the fittings, rollers, and adaptors. The user then purchases the steel tubes separately to save on shipping costs and allow the assembly to be customisable.
[42] Although a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described, it will be apparent to skilled persons that modifications can be made to the embodiment shown.
[43] For example, locking means 200 can be provided for the respective roller assemblies and 50 to allow for selective locking of such roller assemblies if desired. For example, the user may want the boxing bag to only move only between the first frame members 14a (by locking the roller assemblies 20), or only between the second frame members 14b (by locking the roller assembly 50), or for the boxing bag to be locked in a specific location within the space of the perimeter frame 12 (by locking the roller assemblies 20 and 50). The locking assembly can be a brake block engaging the roller wheels 42 or directly engaging the cross member 18 or frame members 14a.
[44] The bag mount 22 in the above example moves in a passive manner in that the bag mount 22 does not move unless the boxing bag 100 is hit. The frame assembly 10 in an additional embodiment can also include motor drive means 210 for driving the roller assemblies 20 and 50. One or more of the roller wheels 42 for example can be drivable wheels. The roller assemblies 20 and 50 can then be moved via the drive means to move the boxing bag 100 in an active manner within the perimeter frame 12. The boxing bag 100 can be moved into a predetermined pattern, a random pattern, or via a remote control operated by a trainer. This provides additional difficulty and movement for the boxer in training.
[45] The term boxing bag as used herein includes any bag used for exercise and/or self-defence training such as punching bags, kickboxing bags, kick bags, aqua bags, punch bags, speed bags and the like.
[46] The frame assembly in one example can be dimensioned and assembled such that the perimeter frame extends over and around a boxing ring.
