Abstract
The invention relates to the supplemental generation of energy from operation of a train, and specifically to the generation of energy in connection to the rotation of disc brake rotors in combination with generators. Rotation of the disc brake rotors creates rotational energy that is transmitted to the generators, which then transmits the energy to a series of batteries for storage. The batteries may be stored in the platform for the train and/or within the train car itself. Energy from the batteries may be utilized by removal of the batteries from the train or through a number of outlets, sockets or connectors associated with the train car or platform.
Claims (36)
1. Claim 1 A system for the generation of energy in a train having disc brakes on axles within the train bogie, the system comprising: a disc brake rotor having a periphery and connectors positioned around its periphery; a generator; a support frame for positioning the generator within the train bogie; and a coupler for mechanically connecting the generator to the connectors on the disc brake rotor.
2. Claim 2 The system of claim 1 wherein the generator comprises a connecting member that mechanically connects the generator to the coupler.
3. Claim 3 The system of claim 2 wherein the connecting member is a shaft.
4. Claim 4 The system of claim 2 wherein the connectors comprise a series of slots and the coupler comprises a coupler member having a plurality of teeth for engaging the slots.
5. Claim 5 The system of claim 2 which further comprises a bracket that maintains the coupler in position relative to the connecting member of the disc brake rotor.
6. Claim 6 The system of claim 1 wherein the connectors comprise a series of slots and the coupler comprises a coupler member having a plurality of teeth for engaging the slots. Claim 7 The system of claim 1 wherein the coupler comprises a chain disposed about at least a portion of a circumference of the disc brake rotor and a coupler member having a plurality of teeth for engaging the chain.
7. Claim 8 The system of claim 7 wherein the connectors comprises elongated members having tapered ends and wherein the chain engages the tapered ends of the elongated members.
8. Claim 9 The system of claim 1 which further comprises a bracket that maintains the coupler in position relative to the connectors of the disc brake rotor.
9. Claim 10 The system of claim 1 which further comprises a clutch, the clutch selectively controlling the generation of energy by the generator.
10. Claim 11 The system of claim 1 where the support frame comprises a pair of rods extending parallel to the axle and a traverse frame member extending between the two rods proximate to the disc brake rotor.
11. Claim 12 The system of claim 11 wherein the traverse frame member comprises an upper frame member, a lower frame member and a pair of end members.
12. Claim 13 The system of claim 12 wherein the generator comprises a shaft that mechanically connects the generator to the coupler and wherein at least one of upper frame member and the lower frame member comprises an opening to rotatably receive the shaft.
13. Claim 14 The system of claim 1 which further comprises an energy storage system. Claim 15 The system of claim 14 wherein the energy storage system comprises a plurality of batteries.
14. Claim 16 The system of claim 15 wherein the train has a plurality of platforms with or without railcars and wherein the plurality of batteries are stored in the platform.
15. Claim 17 The system of claim 16 wherein the plurality of batteries are also stored in a plurality of racks within the railcar.
16. Claim 18 A system for the generation of energy in a train having disc brakes on axles within the train bogie, the system comprising: a disc brake rotor having a periphery and connectors positioned around its periphery; a generator; a support frame for positioning the generator within the train bogie; and a chain disposed about at least a portion of a circumference of the disc brake rotor that engages the connectors and a coupler member having a plurality of teeth for engaging the chain.
17. Claim 19 The system of claim 18 wherein the connectors comprise a series of slots.
18. Claim 20 The system of claim 19 wherein the series of slots are defined by elongated members having tapered ends and wherein the chain engages the tapered ends of the elongated members. Claim 21 The system of claim 18 wherein the generator is a pair of generators and the coupler member is a pair of sprockets.
19. Claim 22 The system of claim 18 which further comprises a bracket that maintains the coupler in position relative to the disc brake rotor.
20. Claim 23 The system of claim 18 which further comprises a clutch, the clutch selectively controlling the generation of energy by the generator.
21. Claim 24 The system of claim 18 where the support frame comprises a pair of rods extending parallel to the axle and a traverse frame member extending between the two rods proximate to the disc brake rotor.
22. Claim 25 The system of claim 24 wherein the traverse frame member comprises an upper frame member, a lower frame member and a pair of end members.
23. Claim 26 The system of claim 25 wherein the generator comprises a shaft that mechanically connects the generator to the coupler and wherein at least one of the upper frame member and the lower frame member comprises an opening to rotatably receive the shaft.
24. Claim 27 A system for the generation of energy in a train having disc brakes on axles within the train bogie, the system comprising: a disc brake rotor having a periphery and connectors positioned around its periphery; a generator; a support frame for positioning the generator within the train bogie, the support frame comprising: a pair of rods extending parallel to the axles; and a traverse frame member extending between the two rods proximate to the disc brake rotor; a chain disposed about at least a portion of a circumference of the disc brake rotor that engages the connectors and a coupler member having a plurality of teeth for engaging the chain; and a connecting member mechanically connecting the generator to the coupler member.
25. Claim 28 The system of claim 27 wherein the connectors comprises a series of slots.
26. Claim 29 The system of claim 28 wherein the series of slots are defined by elongated members having tapered ends and wherein the chain engages the tapered ends of the elongated members.
27. Claim 30 The system of claim 28 wherein the generator is a pair of generators and the coupler member is a pair of sprockets.
28. Claim 31 The system of claim 28 which further comprises a bracket that maintains the coupler in position relative to the disc brake rotor.
29. Claim 32 The system of claim 28 which further comprises a clutch, the clutch selectively controlling the generation of energy by the generator. Claim 33 The system of claim 28 wherein the traverse frame member comprises an upper frame member, a lower frame member and a pair of end members, wherein at least one of the upper frame member and the lower frame member comprises an opening to rotatably receive the connecting member.
30. Claim 34 A system for the generation of energy in a train having an axle within a train bogie, the system comprising: a rotational member mechanically attached to the axle, the rotational member having a periphery and connectors positioned around its periphery; a generator; and a coupler for mechanically connecting the generator to the connectors on the rotational member.
31. Claim 35 The system of claim 34 which further comprises a support frame for positioning the generator within the train bogie.
32. Claim 36 The system of claim 35 wherein the rotational member comprises a disc brake rotor.
33. Claim 37 An energy storage system for storing energy generated from an energy generating system that creates energy from the operation of a train having a plurality of train platforms with or without railcars, the system comprising: an energy control unit that receives energy from the energy generating system; and a plurality of batteries in the platform or railcar and electrically connected to the energy control unit. Claim 38 The system of claim 37 wherein the plurality of batteries are stored in the platform.
34. Claim 39 The system of claim 38 wherein the plurality of batteries are stored in the railcar.
35. Claim 40 The system of claim 37 which further comprises an energy distribution system electrically connected to the plurality of batteries.
36. Claim 41 The system of claim 40 wherein the energy distribution system comprises adapters for transmitting stored energy to an external battery or equipment.
