Cooling fish.-A plant for freezing fish on board fishing steamers, by circulation of cooled brine, comprises several groups of freezing-tanks 3 provided with filling shafts 1 located on deck in the vicinity of the place where the fish are cleaned, the shafts being fitted with pivoted flaps 2 whereby the tanks of each group may be charged in turn. A pivoted grid 5 at the top of each tank is lowered when the tank is full, to prevent the fish rising into the shaft; when raised the grid occupies a recess in the shaft to avoid damage to the fish. The brine is cooled by evaporator coils 23 in tanks 18 and is circulated through the tanks 3 by a common pump 7 or separate pumps. The brine is distributed evenly through a grating 11, Fig. 2 at the top of each tank 3 and passes downwards to grids 13 and overflows behind a false wall 14. It then passes through a filter 15 back into the tank 18. The tanks 3 have brine valves 9 discharging to the filter, and flap doors 19 at the bottom through which the frozen fish are discharged on to a grating 20, where the fish may be sprinkled with water to cover them with ice. A storage chamber 21 is provided for the frozen fish, and the water collects in a tank 22 connected with the bilge pump. The filters preferably serve a group of tanks and may be removed bodily for cleaning through an upper opening fitted with a cover. When the tanks are charged with fish, the pump 7 may be started by devices 8 on the tanks, and the grids 5, the pump 7, the brine valves 9 and fish discharge doors 19 may be interconnected so as to ensure flow of brine onlv when the grids 5 are lowered, and emptying of of brine from the tanks before the fish is discharged.
