Reed fabrics; looms specially modified for weaving; weft inserters not carrying bobbins, cops, and the like, looms with.-A duplex weft-inserting device or thrown finish shuttle for picking up and inserting weft stakes &c. when weaving reed fabrics &c. comprises pairs of gripping-members 16, 16<1> one pair projecting through an orifice at one end of the shuttle and the other pair projecting through the other end of the shuttle, which is operated by means of pickers. When the shuttle is moved to the left, the right hand grippers are closed in and carry a reed &c. into the shed, but towards the end of the pick the right hand grippers are opened so as to release the inserted reed &c. whilst the open left hand grippers are closed and grip a reed &c, which is inserted in the shed when the shuttle subsequently is picked to the right. The members 16, 16<1> are made of spring metal so that the jaws are normally moved towards each other, but are moved apart by wedges 30 on wedge rods 29 adjustably screwed to plungers 20 slidable in bushes 12 threaded into bosses 10 on a block 9. This block has a bearing groove 11 in which rectangular guide heads 21 at the inner ends of the plungers 20 slide, whereby the plungers are prevented from turning. Cross heads 23 secured in recesses 22 in the plunger heads carry studs 25 engaging openings 35 in triggers 31 pivoted on screws carried by links 33 screwed to the block 9. When the shuttle moves across the loom, the offset top ends of the triggers engage tripping-shoulders on the loom, both triggers being moved and both plungers being also moved, but as the respective pairs of gripping-jaws face in opposite directions, one pair of jaws is closed and the other opened. The jaws 16, 16<1> have toothed extremities and are fixed to the flattened surfaces of tubular extensions 15 of sleeves 14 threaded on extensions 13 of the bushings 12.
